Boy Scouts Win Awards in Pinewood Derby

Boy Scouts from Allentown and Bethlehem took part in the Pinewood Derby on March 21. The Pinewood Derby is run by the Boy Scouts Scoutreach Program. Derby cars are supplied to the boys by BSA Scoutreach and Boy Scout packs raise money for additional materials they want to use on their car. Most packs begin work on their car in January in preparation for the March event. The boys literally start with a block of wood, and with some adult help, depending on the age of the boys, create, sand, prime, paint, decorate and put wheels on their car.

The Derby is held at Northeast Middle School in Bethlehem and in this year’s derby Allentown School District had the following winners:

2nd place - Matthew Neumann, Sheridan
3rd place - Logan Wilburn, Ritter
4th place - Fernando Vazquez, Sheridan

In addition, Isaiah Ortiz from Dodd won a merit prize for ‘hottest looking’ car, Fernando Vazquez for ‘funniest’ car and Edwin Duarte from Sheridan for ‘most creative’ car.
